State’s top defender Armour-Davis to Alabama

The state of Alabama’s top defensive prospect will play his college football in Tuscaloosa.

On Friday, Scout 100 cornerback prospect and Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul’s cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis went public with a decision to commit to the Alabama Crimson Tide, he tells Scout.

“It’s just the best decision for me,” he said. “It’s great man!”

Before selecting Alabama, the state’s No. 2 overall prospect and top defender admittedly went between each of his three finalists in great detail. Auburn had the upper hand early on before Florida State seemed like the most likely landing spot. But this spring, Alabama made a strong push behind defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and secondary coach Derrick Ansley while Armour-Davis visited Tuscaloosa multiple times.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback prospect, who capped his junior track and field season as the state’s 5A 100-meter dash champion, had his family in his corner before the Crimson Tide pick was made.

“It’s just Alabama,” he said in the spring. “I’ve had a couple of family members go to Alabama and it really is a great place for me. I know the need there and one of the best coaches of all time is there.”

On National Signing Day in February, Nick Saban, who Armour-Davis was referring to, vocalized the need for cornerbacks in the class of 2018 after failing to sign one in the class of 2017. One of the first phone calls following the completion of the No. 1 class was with Armour-Davis and Alabama’s momentum only increased from there.

The four-star prospect is the third commitment for Alabama in the month of June and fifth overall in the class of 2018. He is the first from within Yellowhammer State lines. The rising senior prospect joins many St. Paul’s Episcopal products who played at Alabama before him, including A.J. McCarronMark Barron (see photo below), Jacob Coker and current member of the program Joshua Casher.
