Pablo Sandoval played the role of clutch hitter when the San Francisco Giants needed it least. He hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against the San Diego Padres on Sunday to win the season finale 5-4.
The problem was that the victory helped ensure the Giants would not wind up with the first overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft. That’s because the Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins and matched the Giants with a 64-98 record.
Unfortunately for the Giants, the Tigers hold a tiebreaker and will receive next summer’s top pick. It’s just the perfect piece of punctuation in a disastrous season by the bay.
