The New York Yankees overtook first place in the American League East on Friday and appear on the verge of a move that could keep them there for the remainder of the season.
The Yankees are the leading candidate to acquire Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, who adds that the two sides are optimistic that a trade will be completed.
Gray is the top starter available ahead of Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline and the A’s almost assured that they’ll deal the 27-year-old Saturday when they pushed his next start back.
In 16 appearances this year, Gray is 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 94 strikeouts in 97 innings. He’s also under contract through the 2019 season.
