MadFriars Daily Farm Report: June 7

Chihuahuas 6, Albuquerque Isotopes 5

Key Statistics: RHP Kyle Lloyd 5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K; 3B Christian Villanueva 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI; LF Nick Buss 2-3, RS, BB, SB (3); RF Jabari Blash 1-4, 2B, RS, 2 K

Prospect Watch: RHP Kyle Lloyd made his third start since his promotion to Triple-A, and is still waiting to find the same success.  As has been documented before Lloyd has one fantastic pitch that when it is on is nearly unhittable.  Unfortunately when he misses or it flattens out, it gets hit, and hard.  Lloyd gave up three home runs in the game, which were the first home runs he has allowed all season.  Lloyd had settled down after giving up a homer in each of the first two innings, retiring eight in a row at one point.  Lloyd faced five batters in the sixth, all of which reached base, before he was removed… The Chihuahua’s were able to come back scoring two in the ninth, with Diego Goris scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.  Goris has seen time at nearly every position, as he is playing his third season in El Paso… RHP Phil Maton pitched around a leadoff triple to record his 12th save.  He is not allowed a run in his last eight appearances (9.1 IP) striking out 15.

Missions 8, Midland RockHounds 6

Key Statistics: RHP Enyel De Los Santos 4.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K; SS Luis Urias 1-4, RS, RBI, BB; 2B Jose Rondon 2-4, 2B, RS, 2 RBI; DH Franmil Reyes 2-4, 2 RBI; 3B Ty France 2-4, 2B, 2 RS

Prospect Watch: Some players do well against certain teams, and horrible verse others.  Top prospect Enyel De Los Santos does well against the rest of the Texas League, and horrible against the team from Midland.  After tonight’s start, his line against Midland looks like 4 GS, 13.2 IP, 24 H, 23 ER, 12 BB, 12 K.  Against the rest of the Texas League, 49.2 IP, 33 H, 14 ER, 10 BB, 40 K… The game appeared as if it was getting out of hand in the fifth.  De Los Santos was removed and Midland looked poised to score more.  That was until CF Auston Bousfield rifled a throw from center to home nailing the runner at the plate to end the fifth.  It was a close call that ended with the runner and Midland’s manager being ejected.  Bousfield would later come up with two on and two out in the eighth and hit the game winning 2-RBI double.  Despite being a high round pick, Bousfield has never turned that into much success offensively.  He ended 2016 with a .534 OPS and hasnt been much better this season in Double-A.  The double was just his third in San Antonio, but will hopefully spark him to continue hitting.

Storm had the night off

TinCaps 4,  Lake County Captains

Key Statistics: RHP Mason Thompson 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 6 K; RHP Emmanuel Ramirez 4 IP, 5 H, ER, 5 K; LF Jorge Ona 2-3, 2 RS, BB; DH GK Young 3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI

Prospect Watch: Before the game RF Jorge Ona, LHP Logan Allen, and SS Fernando Tatis Jr were named to the MWL All Star game.  What a difference a catcher makes.  After just one out in the second RHP Mason Thompson had already thrown 47 pitches, walked two, giving up a few very hard hit balls, one for a triple, and hit a batter.  Newly demoted catcher AJ Kennedy went out to talk to his young starter.  A few pitches later Kennedy caught the runner stealing, and the next pitch Thompson retired the batter to end the inning.  Thompson would then retire the next nine in a row, needing only 38 pitches to finish the next 3.2 innings.  After being able to finish only four innings in his first two starts due to pitch counts, Mason Thompson went five innings on just 85 pitches.  It makes a difference having a “veteran” catcher who is known for being a leader and defense first…  Last year at this time GK Young was leading Coastal Carolina to their first ever College World Series championship, thanks mainly to Young getting hot at the right time.  This year, Young is again getting hot at the right time.  Since the start of this hot streak 10 games ago, Young has 14 hits including 3 doubles, 3 homeruns, and 12 RBI hitting .400 with an OPS over 1.000.  He has also seen his OPS climb from .594 to .732 during this span.
