Girardi leaves Yankees ‘with a heavy heart’ after 10 seasons

Joe Girardi confirmed his departure from the New York Yankees on Thursday, following 10 seasons as the club’s manager.

“With a heavy heart, I come to you because the Yankees have decided not to bring me back,” Girardi said in a statement.

The Yankees also confirmed the managerial change Thursday morning.

Girardi’s statement, suggesting the Yankees chose to part ways, came shortly after ESPN’s Andrew Marchand reported the decision was mutual.

According to FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman, there had been tension between Girardi and the Yankees’ front office this season.

The 53-year-old managed the Yankees for 10 seasons, and his 910 wins with the club rank sixth in franchise history. Under his watch, the Yankees made the playoffs six times, never finished below .500, and won their most recent World Series title in 2009.
