Farrell out as Red Sox manager

The Boston Red Sox will not bring back John Farrell as manager for the 2018 season, the club announced Wednesday.

Boston will immediately begin the search for a replacement.

Farrell had been with the team since the 2013 season. During his tenure, the Red Sox won three American League East titles (2013, 2016, and 2017) and a World Series championship in 2013.

The 55-year-old’s future with the Red Sox appeared to be in doubt Tuesday when a report indicated president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski would discuss Farrell’s fate with the team’s ownership group. That came a day after the Red Sox were eliminated from the American League Division Series in four games by the Houston Astros. In 2016, Boston was also eliminated from the ALDS in a sweep by the Cleveland Indians.

Farrell finishes with a combined 432-378 managerial record in Boston.
