Cubs June 25 Minors Recap

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 1, Iowa 0—Suspended in bottom of 2nd 

After Will Middlebrooks homered off Iowa’s Seth Frankoff to lead off the second, rain suspended play at Round Rock. The game will be completed at a later date as the I-Cubs head out of town and return to Principal Park on Monday. Outfielder Kyle Schwarber is expected to join the team after being optioned to AAA.

I-Cubs Notes: Williams Perez (2-7, 6.661 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball on Monday night at Principal Park against New Orleans.….A veteran of 216 major league games, all in relief, 33-year-old Fernando Rodriguez has worked his way back from a right shoulder strain that ended his 2016 season and may be ready to help the Cubs in the bullpen. After surrendering a pair of runs in two frames in his Cubs debut, Rodriguez has tossed 4.2 shouting innings with seven strikeouts and no walks in his last four AAA outings. 

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 2, Mobile (Angels) 1

A bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth gave the Smokies the win and snapped their six-game losing streak. 

Hitting Recap: Smokies took 1-0 lead in the second when 3B Jason Vosler (.265) walked, took third on a single by RF Yasiel Balaguert (.224) and scored on a double play ground out by C Cael Brockmeyer (.175). In the ninth, Vosler was hit by a pitch, took second on an error, advanced to third on a walk and scored when PH Ian Rice (.246) drew the second free pass of the inning. Smokies had six hits, two from Balaguert. 

Pitching Chart: Brett Anderson made his first rehab start since going on the DL with a lower back strain back in early June. Anderson made six starts for Chicago (2-2, 8.18 ERA, 22 IP, 2.09 WHIP) and after going on the DL, made a few appearances in Mesa before his first outing in AA. On pitch count of four innings or 60-65 pitches, the lefty had the Bay Bears beating the ball into the ground, coaxing seven ground ball outs in his 51-pitch outing that lated four frames. Anderson gave up a run on five hits and didn’t issue a walk or record a strikeout. James Pugliese  (0.84 ERA) continues to shine in AA as the right-hander added three more shutout frames to his resume. Pugliese worked around three hits and two walks. Justin Hancock (1-2, 5.54 ERA) got the win with a scoreless eighth. Dillon Maples (1.80 ERA) earned his second save as the hard-throwing right-hander recorded the final three outs. 

Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (6-2, 2.85 ERA) gets the ball on Monday night in the series finale in Mobile.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach vs. Down East—Postponed

The game was canceled and will be made up on July 20 when the Wood Ducks return to Myrtle Beach. Pelicans host Potomac on Monday night with Justin Steele (5-3, 2.32 ERA) expected to start. 

Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes (Dodgers) 2, South Bend 1

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth gave the Loons the walk-off win as they took three-of-four from South Bend to start the second half.

Hitting Recap: Cubs were blanked the first seven frames until Roberto Caro led off the eighth with a single, took second on balk and scored on a RBI base hit from 3B Zack Short (.237). It was the Cubs only run. LF Vimael Machin .(296) had three singles while SS Isaac Paredes  (.260) doubled and walked. DH Kevonte Mitchell (.238) saw his first action since June 16 and the 21-year-old went 2-for-4. 

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease (2.76 ERA) made his third start since going on the DL and his 11th overall, tossing four no-hit innings with five punchouts. Cease threw 52 pitches, 33 for strikes, and was hitting 97 mph on the gun in the fourth. He issued two free passes and had a game score of 65. The Loons used a walk, a single and a wild pitch, all with two outs to score a run against Tyler Peyton  (3.64 ERA) is his first inning. Peyton finished the day with a line of 3.1 IP, 5 H 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K. Pedro Silverio (4-4, 4.81 ERA) got the final two outs of the eighth but the Loons used pair of back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly to win the game in the ninth.

SB-Cubs News: RH Duncan Robinson (5-4, 2.08 ERA, 65 IP, 9 BB, 52 BB, 0.94 WHIP)  makes his ninth start at Fort Wayne on Monday night. 

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 7, Salem-Keizer (Giants) 4

Joe Martarano went 4-for-4 and smacked his first pro homer as the Ems swept Salem-Keizer and extended their win streak to four games.

Hitting Recap: SS Aramis Ademan (.205) got the Ems on the board in the fifth with a RBI triple, scoring Jose Gonzalez (.265), who led off the frame with a double. Joe Martarano (.467) launched his first professional homer with one out in the sixth and after Jhonny Bethencourt (.314) doubled, Kwang-Min Kwon (.242) gave the Ems a 4-3 lead with his second long ball of the year. Martarano is off to a great start as the former linebacker at Boise State has turned his attention full-time to baseball. After going 0-for-3 in the season opener, the 22-year-old is 14-for-his-last-27 and leads the NWL with a .467 average. 1B Gustavo Polanco (.404) had his 10-game hit streak snapped as he was the only starter without a hit. 2B Rafael Narea (.351), Kwon and Gonzalez all finished with two hits as the Ems had 14 in the win.

Pitching Chart: Matt Swarmer (1-0, 3.60 ERA) blanked the Volcanoes on one hit over the first three innings but a double and back-to-back homers opened the fourth. The right-hander finished the night with a line of 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K. Andry Rondon tossed two scoreless frames, Holden Cammack gave up a run in the eighth, and Jhon Romero worked the ninth for his first save. 

Emeralds Notes: Ems host Hillsboro on Monday night and send Alonso Garcia to the mound. 

Arizona Rookie League—A’s 8, Cubs 5

Cubs (1-1) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first but the A’s collected 15 hits in the win.

Hitting Recap: Cubs had seven hits in the loss and scored three in the first on RBI hits from Marcus Mastrobuoni and Yovanny Cuevas while the A’s added a throwing error. Cuevas finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run. RF Jonathan Sierra went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. 

Pitching Chart: Alfredo Colorado got the start and only lasted three innings in his stateside debut, allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Eury Ramos surrendered three runs in four frames on six hits and a walk. Nathan Sweeney gave up a run in the eighth.

Cubs Notes: Cubs face the Giants on Monday at Sloan Park. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1

Cubs (5-13) had Sunday off and look to make it two straight over the Indians/Brewers co-op squad. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2

Cubs (8-10) had Sunday off and face the Mets 2 on Monday. In Saturday’s game, the Mets 2 scored a run in the bottom of the 11th and beat the Cubs 9-8. Mets 2 took 5-0 lead with five run in the second and the Cubs tied the game with a five-spot in the third. Cubs 2 tied the game in the top of the ninth on a RBI single by Luis Ubiera (.231). 1B Jonathan Soto (.283) and DH Miller Chacon (.120) both doubled, scored once and finished with two RBI. Ubiera finished 2-for-5 while 3B Henrry Pedra (.267) was 2-for-4 with a RBI.  Jonathan Bruzual (9.53 ERA) only lasted 1.1 innings, surrendering five runs on four hits and three walks. Jose Gomez was charged with three runs while Ivan Medina (2.1 IP) and Jose Gonzalez (3 IP) kept the Mets off the board. Ferrol Heredia didn’t retire a hitter as three straight singles ended the game.
