Jansen walks 1st batter of 2017 to snap record-setting strikeout streak

Just when you thought Kenley Jansen wasn’t from this planet, he issued his first walk of the 2017 season.

The right-hander’s incredible streak of strikeouts without issuing a walk came to an unfortunate end in the ninth inning of Sunday’s game at the hands of Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Jansen set the record on June 2 after bringing his impressive total to 39 strikeouts without issuing a walk, passing St. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright, who previously held the milestone at 35 straight.

He has now compiled 52 strikeouts while surrendering only one walk this year. Amazingly, the walk surrendered on Sunday was Jansen’s first regular season base on balls since Oct. 1 of last year.

As if Jansen’s storied season wasn’t already impressive enough, the 29-year-old reliever ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning – a career first in both categories.

In 32 2/3 innings this season, Jansen has converted 17 saves and holds a formidable 0.83 ERA and 0.55 WHIP.
