Cubs June 27 Minors Recap

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 7, New Orleans (Baby Cakes) 6

Stephen Bruno was hit by a pitch with the bass loaded to force in the go-ahead run in the eighth as Iowa beat the Baby Cakes for the second straight game. 

Hitting Recap: Making his second start, LF Kyle Schwarber (.375) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a RBI single in the seventh that tied the game at 6-6. RF John Andreoli (.216) had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, and a homer, his sixth. C Victor Caratini (.343) was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Caratini has 20 doubles this season. Cubs won the game in the eighth when they loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Stephen Bruno (.260) was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (9.42 ERA) made his third start, allowing six runs on nine hits and a season-high six walks.  Conor Mullee got the final two outs of the fifth but not before allowing all three inherited runners to score. Ross Detwiler worked a pair of scoreless frames in his second outing. RB Fernando Rodriguez (1-0, 2.08 ERA) continues to impress with two more no-hit frames, fanning three and earning the win.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has not named a starter for Wednesday night’s tilt. 

Southern League—AA—Tennessee

Smokies had Tuesday off and return home on Wednesday night to host Jackson. A starter has not been named. 

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Potomac (Nationals) 2

Adbert Alzolay had a solid outing and Zack Short went 3-for-3 in his first Carolina League start as the Pelicans snapped their three-game skid. 

Hitting Recap: Myrtle Beach took a 2-0 lead in the first on a RBI ground out by LF Eloy Jimenez (.269) and a RBI single from DH Tyler Alamo (.271). 1B Matt Rose (.218) added a sacrifice fly in the fourth and 2B Jesse Hodges (.260) knocked in a run in the fifth with a ground out. SS Zack Short went 3-for-3 in his first Carolina League start while Alamo, C P.J. Higgins (.222) and 2B Trent Giambrone (.244) all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (7-1, 2.85 ERA) may not be getting the attention as some of the Cubs pitching prospects but that’s about to change. Firing a fastball that was touching 97 on Tuesday night, The Venezuelan native fanned seven over 5.2 innings, yielding two runs on three hits in the 81-pitch outing. The bullpen was almost perfect. Jordan Minch (2.00 ERA) needed one pitch to get out of the sixth to strand two runners and tossed a scoreless seventh. Kyle Miller walked one in the eighth and James Norwood fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save. 

Pelicans News: Thomas Hatch (3-6, 3.33 ERA) takes the hill on Wednesday night against Potomac……Leading the MWL with 54 walks, third in runs scored (50) and seventh in on-base percentage (.399), infielder Zack Short has been promoted to Myrtle Beach for the second half of the season. In 66 game for the SB-Cubs, the 22-year-old hit .237/.393/.424 with a team-best seven homers and 15 stolen bases. The Cubs 17h round pick out of Sacred Heart College in 2016 also led South Bend with 17 errors while playing short, third and second. SS Andruw Monasterio is headed back to South Bend. The Venezuelan native started the year at extended spring training and was promoted to Myrtle Beach in mid-May. In 26 games for the Pelicans, Monasterio hit .241/.313/287.

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne (Padres) 11, South Bend 10

Fort Wayne scored twice in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to rally past South Bend.

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 10-9 lead with two runs in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Roberto Caro (.278) and a RBI double from Vimael Machin (.293). Cubs took an 8-4 lead in the seventh with six runs, three coming on Kevonte Mitchell’s thee-run homer. 2B Yeiler Peguero (.246) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored while Caro and SS Isaac Paredes (.256) knocked in a pair.

Pitching Chart: Manuel Rondon (4.63 ERA) got the start and went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. He gave up a pair of homers, fanned seven and threw 89 pitches, 54 for strikes. Chad Hockin (3.86 ERA) worked the sixth and allowed a run on two hits. Pedro Silverio (4.95 ERA) gave up four runs (one earned) in .2 innings. Wyatt Short (1-3, 3.82 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits over the final two innings. 

SB-Cubs News: Erling Moreno (1-1, 3.46 ERA) gets the ball on Wednesday night at Fort Wayne. 

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 5, Hillsboro (D-Backs) 2

Miguel Amaya had four hits to lead Eugene (8-5) past the Hops (6-7). 

Hitting Recap: DH Miguel Amaya (.286) went 4-for-4 and smacked his first stateside homer, a solo shot in the fifth. SS Aramis Ademan (.200) hit his second homer, a two-run blast in the third to give the Ems the lead for good. 3B Rafael Narea (.326) and 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.289) both added RBI. 

Pitching Chart: Javier Assad (1-2, 2.45 ERA) earned his first win, striking out a career-high nine hitters in five innings. The 19-year-old right-hander gave up an unearned run on six hits with no walks. He threw 84 pitches, 61 for strikes, and had a game score of 64. Manuel Rodriguez (3.86 ERA) fanned three in two scoreless and Mark Malave (2.25 ERA) added a scoreless eighth. Junior Marte (1.80 ERA) allowed a run in the ninth.

Emeralds Notes: Ems host Hillsboro and send Jesus Camargo (0-1, 3.86 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday night.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs had Tuesday off and face the Dodgers on Wednesday night.

Dominican Summer League—Astros Orange 12, Cubs 1 (10) 

Cubs scored eight times in the bottom of the ninth but it still wasn’t enough.

Hitting Recap: Cubs were blanked for the first six innings but their rally fell short even though they scored eight times in the ninth. SS Christopher Morel was 3-for-4, including a three-run homer in the ninth, his second. 3B Fidel Matos hit a solo homer (3) and finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. DH Daniel Diaz was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Yovanny Cruz (1-1, 2.14 ERA) went five innings but didn’t get much help from his defense as seven of the nine runs he allowed were unearned. He surrendered 10 hits and fanned four. Kleiber Carreno (7.56 ERA) gave up three runs in .2 innings, allowing two hits and four walks. Omar Ventura (4.38 ERA) worked 3.1 shutout frames.

Cubs Notes: Cubs 1 face the Astros Orange on Wednesday. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (15), Phillies White 5

Cubs collected a season-high 17 hits and also set a team mark for runs in the win over the Phillies.

Hitting Recap: DH Jonathan Soto (.323) went 4-for-4 with a pair of triples and six RBI, scoring three times. CF Alonso Gaitan (.313) went 3-for-6 with three RBI and Henrry Pedra (.292) was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Franklin Tineo (.327) added a pair of RBI while SS Josue Huma (.163) scored four times hitting leadoff.

Pitching Chart: Danis Correa (2-2, 2.49 ERA) went five innings and got the win, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. Edison Novas (0.00 ERA) and Fernando Calderon (2.77 ERA) both hurled two shutout frames. 

Cubs Notes: Cubs 2 have a rematch with the Phillies White on Wednesday.
